Deceptively Good Books
Most business, self-help, and insight-porn books sound like trash, like the Malcolm Gladwell variety, but some are actually good. I made a list of some good ones.
A good book simply teaches me something; it doesn't have to be perfect. A perfect book in my opinion gets to the point and concisely delivers truths without trying to comfort the reader in a cloying tone. Many pop-psych books fail at this, but they can still teach me something, so they're not disqualified.
Here's the list.
- McGonigal, The Upside of Stress
- Carnegie, How to Win Friends and Influence People
- Clear, Atomic Habits
Here are books that sound dumb which upon skimming I discovered actually were dumb.
- Anything by Malcolm Gladwell
- Godin, Lynchpin: Are You Indispensable?
